Organisers of the AT&T Wireless Cayman Islands Marathon have announced that as a result of Hurricane Ivan and the subsequent recovery effort currently taking place, the race, which was scheduled to take place in December, has been postponed until Sunday, 6 March 2005.
“Although we regret having to postpone the Marathon, we feel that not only will this new date give runners time to regain their focus and start training again but the island will have had enough time to rebuild to the point where we can welcome overseas runners to run through our streets and enjoy the world-renown Caymanian warmth and hospitality,” explained race organiser Rhonda Kelly of Kelly Holding Ltd. “We have received dozens of emails from overseas runners expressing their concern for the Cayman Islands and their eagerness to come and be a part of the event.”
Other than the date, Rhonda says that not much else about the event has changed. The major sponsors – AT&T Wireless, Cayman Airways, Grand Cayman Marriott, Z99, Department of Tourism and Cayman National – are still on board; the health and fitness expo is scheduled for the day before the race, Saturday, 5 March and last year’s popular water stations contest is still going to take place.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for their continued support and let the public know that it’s time to get healthy again!” said Rhonda. “Some of us need to start our own recovery effort, fitness-wise, and the marathon presents a great goal for us to work toward. Participants can run the marathon (26.2 miles), walk or run the half-marathon (13.1 miles) or enter a four-person team. It all benefits the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps, a worthwhile cause, and our own personal health, which makes it well worth the effort.”
