CAYMAN ISLANDS MARATHON MEDIA - Help Needed for Upcoming Marathon
Posted: 6/16/2003

Not everyone can run a marathon, or even a half marathon for that matter but the organizers of the upcoming Cadet Corps Marathon on Sunday, 7 December would like the non-running public to know that they can still make a contribution.

“One of the most important elements of a marathon is the water stops,” explains Rhonda Kelly, marathon organiser. “Any runner will tell you that it is essential to his/her successful completion of the race. We are looking for a few good men and women to man replenishment stations along the route.”

According to Rhonda, there are 13 water stations to be supervised and any person over the age of 18 qualifies to man one.

“We’re encouraging groups of five or more people to apply to work at a water stop,” says Rhonda. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a company or just a group of friends. The goal is to have the most creative, motivating and exciting station. The only qualifications you need are a lot of enthusiasm, a willingness to help and the ability to get up at 4:00 in the morning!”

Water stop attendants will also have the opportunity to win great prizes as runners are going to vote for the best station along the route.

“We want people who are going to cheer the runners on and find creative ways to enhance their stand,” continues Rhonda. “They have got to be able to motivate the runners to run that next mile and finish the race.”
