CAYMAN ISLANDS MARATHON MEDIA - Cool Prizes for Marathon Winners
Posted: 11/16/2006

Less than three weeks before race day, organisers of the Cayman Islands Marathon are still working hard to secure great prizes for runners, the latest acquisition being a pair of TAG Heuer watches for the top male and female marathon finishers.

The two TAG Heuer Formula 1 watches carry a retail value of US$950 and US$750 and are described as top-of-the-range sports watches designed exclusively for people who take leisure seriously. They are conceived for action, but also ideal for eveningwear. (www.tagheuer.com). TAG Heuer, distributed locally by Kirk Freeport, is also donating 500 TAG t-shirts which runners will get in their goodie bags.

“We are so excited that TAG has agreed to partner with the Cayman Islands Marathon this year,” said Race Director Rhonda Kelly of Kelly Holding Ltd. “Since 1860 TAG Heuer has been associated with the world of competitive sport. TAG has served as Official Timekeeper at countless sporting events, from the Olympic Games in the 1920s, followed by Formula One and ski events, to the legendary Indianapolis 500 race and Indy Racing League competitions since 2004. Their support of the Cayman Islands Marathon enhances the profile of the race, and we know that the lucky winners of the TAG watches will truly enjoy these beautiful, quality timepieces. As organisers, we hope this is just the beginning of a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership with both Kirk Freeport and TAG Heuer.”

All finishers of the Marathon, Half-Marathon and 4-Person Relay will receive a specially designed medal and a certificate of participation. The top 3 runners in each category, both male and female, will receive trophies. The top Male and Female marathoners and half-marathoners will receive Cayman Airways tickets and Maui Jim Sports Sun Glasses courtesy of Island Companies. Local runners and the top relay teams will receive Maui Jim Shades, Nike gift certificates from Sport N Zone and running shoes from The Athlete’s Foot. In addition all runners will be entered to win a variety of restaurant and other local business gift certificates.

“We are so grateful to all of our supporters who have provided us with these great gifts for our runners,” says Ms. Kelly. “I don’t think anyone runs 26.2 miles or 13.1 miles just to win a prize but it is a bonus and a reward which can prove very motivational.”

Kelly says the ultimate goal is to offer cash prizes to runners. This is something organisers are working on for future races. “Most marathons offer some kind of monetary award for runners’ efforts. This enhances the credibility of the race for a serious athlete, and raises the level of participation.”
