Cayman’s 2004 Olympic athlete Kareem Streete-Thompson will join former West Indies cricketers Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose on a Cable & Wireless-sponsored relay team to run the Cayman Islands Marathon, taking place on Sunday, 7 December.

The threesome will be running for the Red Cross AIDS Awareness programme, a charity chosen by Cable & Wireless, who recently entered a partnership with the local branch of the British Red Cross. Each athlete will run 6.5 miles each of the 26.1-mile race and one more celebrity is expected to join the team.

“We are very excited that these athletes have agreed to join us for the Marathon,” says race organiser Rhonda Kelly of Kelly Holding Ltd. “None of these men are distance runners so the race for them is about having fun and helping a charity. We hope the public will come out and support their valiant efforts.”

“I was hoping to be able to walk my 6.5 miles,” jokes Courtney Walsh. “I don’t think I’ve ever run that distance before so it will be interesting to see how this turns out.”

The Cadet Corps Marathon is supported by major sponsors Cayman Airways, Z99, the Marriott Resort Grand Cayman, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, Cayman National, Texaco Caribbean and Flowers Bottled Water. Registration for the race is still open, according to Rhonda, and runners can register for the marathon, half marathon or four-person relay.
