CAYMAN ISLANDS MARATHON MEDIA - Big Race a Big Success!
Posted: 3/7/2005

Almost 200 runners turned out for the Cingular Wireless Cayman Islands Marathon, which took place on Sunday, 6 March, and attracted just as many supporters and spectators.

“We are absolutely thrilled about how the event turned out this year!” exclaims race organiser Rhonda Kelly of Kelly Holding Ltd. “We had to postpone the original date in December 2004 due to Hurricane Ivan and lost many of the overseas runners who had registered for that date. We also had to deal with the shortage of hotel rooms and the high season on the island during the month of March which caused an accommodation problem for potential runners from overseas so we are just grateful for those runners who did show up, and thank them for their support.”

The race this year was enhanced by several new elements, the first being a new start/finish line located at Breezes by the Bay Restaurant on the waterfront. Breezes opened at 4:30am to accommodate volunteers, supporters and spectators, selling breakfast and providing a great view of the race and the harbour.

Another new feature of the race was live commentary on the race provided by CITN’s Vanessa Hansen and James Bebarfald who kept spectators entertained and informed as to the status of the runners and their whereabouts on the course.

“Having Vanessa and James provide a running commentary on the race and the runners brought a lot of energy and excitement to the event, especially for the spectators who were able to know beforehand when their runner was expected at the finish line,” says Rhonda. “Partnering with Breezes was also a great feat for us as they provided a convenient location with a beautiful view and a festive atmosphere. I do not think there are many start/finish lines around the world that can boast the stunning ocean backdrop that the Cingular Wireless Cayman Islands Marathon does.”

Runners were also impressed with the race.

“Everything went really smoothly. The staff and volunteers were great. This was my first marathon on the island and I was pleasantly surprised. It was an excellent morning!” said one female half-marathoner

“I had two friends visit from Sarasota specifically to participate in the half marathon,” says another. “We had all run the Disney half-marathon together in January, and they enjoyed this one just as much. They especially liked the medal.”

Organisers are already looking forward to 2006 when the race will take place on Sunday, 3 December.

“We have over a year and a half to prepare and promote, and once again our goals are grand. We want 2000 runners here and we plan to spend the next 21 months ensuring we reach that target,” Rhonda declares.

The Cingular Wireless Cayman Islands Marathon was presented by Texaco and sponsored by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, Cayman Airways, Z99, Breezes by the Bay Restaurant, Flowers Bottled Water, Gatorade, Cayman National, The Final Touch, KPMG and CUC.
