CAYMAN ISLANDS MARATHON - Cayman Marathon Wants Walkers Too!
Posted: 11/13/2007

The Cayman Islands Marathon, Half-Marathon and four-person relay takes place on Sunday, 2 December and organizers are letting walkers know that they are invited and welcomed to participate in the race.

The race route is officially open for six hours to accommodate the runners doing the full marathon (26.2 miles), making it possible for those doing the half marathon (13.1 miles) to complete their race at pretty much any pace they feel comfortable at.

“We love having the walkers with us for the Half-Marathon,” said Rhonda Kelly, Race Director. “Not only do they add to the enjoyment of the race but it’s also nice to see them along the route. They keep the course populated, which is great for a small race across such a long course.”

One walker who will definitely be on the course again is Dara Flowers. Dara and her best friend Keisha have walked the half-marathon the past two years, and look forward to the event each year.

“The half-marathon is a great way for us to cap off the year,” says Dara. “It happens right before Christmas and the end of the year so for us it’s a way to celebrate our fitness achievements over the past 12 months, and spend some time together.”

Dara says that she and Keisha walk four times a week, clocking three to five miles each day.

“We really don’t have any goals for the race except to finish but we do try to walk a 15-minute mile, and we have fun doing it. The first year I think we finished absolutely last but we chatted the entire way and enjoyed the scenery. 13.1 miles seems intimidating to many people but you have six hours to finish it so you can take your time. You would be surprised at how doable it is.”
