The Cayman Islands Marathon, Half-Marathon and 4-person relay takes place this Sunday, 2 December starting at 5am in front of Breezes By The Bay Restaurant. The public is invited to come out and support this great charity event which raises funds for the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps and the Cancer Society.
Organisers have also introduced a Kids Fun Run this year, sponsored by the Ministry of Sports and Education, for kids ages 8 to 12 years old. This event will start at 9:30am at the Government Administration Building (Glass House) on Elgin Avenue and terminate at Breezes by the Bay, where the awards presentation will take place.
Highlights of the race this year include the introduction of awards in age categories. The top three male and female winners in the age groups of 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and over will be recognized for their achievements.
Another exciting element each year is the Cayman Airways Water Stop Challenge where runners vote for the most exciting, enthusiastic, supportive water station. The Mexicans are the station to beat every year and will be facing some tough competition from such newcomers as Incredible India and Run Santa Run who will be vying hard for the five free Cayman Airways tickets that are up for grabs each year.
Organisers are asking for the public’s cooperation during the race by keeping traffic along the race route to a minimum, and in particular those people who live along the route are being asked to tie up their dogs, and turn on their Christmas lights if they have any from 4:30am on the morning of the 2nd.
Approximately 50 marathoners, 275 half-marathoners and 40 teams are expected to be running through the streets of Cayman. The race starts at Breezes and goes through South Church Street, South Sound and Old Prospect Road, after which runners turn around and go back through South Sound and then onto Walkers and Hospital Roads, Elgin Avenue, Edward and Fort Streets and back to Breezes.
