AVIATION CELEBRATION MEDIA - Schools to get involved in 50th Anniversary of Aviation
Posted: 9/25/2002

The students in the Cayman Islands will play a vital part in the plans for the upcoming celebration to mark the 50th Anniversary of Aviation in the Cayman Islands.

"The committee has created a comprehensive programme to ensure that all schools have an opportunity to be involved in the anniversary and also learn about Cayman's aviation history and aviation in general. This is being done through competitions and a series of talks on Cayman aviation," explained the Event Coordinator Rhonda Kelly.

The competitions for students are open to children in the Cayman Islands from age 5 up to 18. Prizes of trips for families of 4 are being offered for the top student in each category - courtesy of Major sponsor Cayman Airways and supporters Walt Disney World and Flight of Fantasy attractions.

"We are certain the children will want to be a part of these contests not only because of the great prizes being offered, but because aviation is such a fascinating topic, the competitions also encourage children to use their imaginations," says Rhonda.

The competition is divided into three different categories by students' ages as follows, 5 to 10, 11 to 14 and 15 to 18. For the youngest age group there is an art competition where children are to create a picture showing what they imagine airplanes and/or airports looking like in another 50 years. For the middle category it is to write an essay detailing 'The World if there were no airplanes' and for the older students it is a short story describing what they see 'Flying in the year 2052' to be like.

"We felt that all of the topics would allow children to see what aviation has done for the Cayman Islands and indeed the world and let them also be creative," Rhonda continued.

Another part of the celebration involving the islands' schools is the talks that have been planned for the week of October 14th - 18th. "During this week all the schools that are able to participate will have someone from the aviation industry visit their school and talk and interact with the students. For the older children the talks will take on more of a career theme and for the younger ones it will be geared towards general aviation and the fascination with flying. It is the committee's goal that over the next couple of months in one way or another every child in these islands has the opportunity to learn something about aviation and what it has meant to the Cayman Islands," Rhonda concluded.
