AVIATION CELEBRATION MEDIA - A Day For Aviation Celebration in Cayman
Posted: 11/19/2002

The Cayman Islands will enjoy some of the best in aviation next week when the 50th anniversary of aviation will be celebrated.

The occasion being marked is that of the first landing at what is now known as the Owen Roberts International Airport, which took place on November 28th 1952. The public are invited to be part of all the action on Saturday November 30th when there will be a whole day of activities.

From 9am - 11am at the General Aviation terminal the Cayman Flying Club will coordinate a young eagles programme where children can meet one of the youngest pilots to solo at age 14! Jamail Larkins, the 18 year old national spokesperson for the Young Eagles programme started flying at age 12 and will be speaking to young people in Cayman during his visit to Cayman for the anniversary. Jamail will be working with the Cayman Flying Club to execute the Young Eagles Programme whereby youngsters are introduced to the wonders of flight.

Children interested in flying can meet Jamail and other members of the Cayman Flying Club and receive a general introduction to Light aircraft, learn about the instruments and even get a brief plane ride up to see what it's really all about. Parents must accompany their children if they would like them to be part of the programme.

Jamail will also have autographed portraits for the children in attendance and speak with them about his experiences in flying and how he learned and continues to enjoy it. For more information about Jamail - visit his web site www.jamaillarkins.com.

Also during this time the Flying Club will have discovery flights for adults who may be interested in learning to fly. Speak with people who teach flying in Cayman and find out more about this fascinating activity and take a flight up and see what it will be like to learn.

On Saturday afternoon there will be fun for the entire family at the 7-mile Public Beach from Noon until 5pm. The celebration will include a parachute jump by four parachutists coming from the United States for the occasion and the visit of a real PBY seaplane - the kind that use to service the Cayman Islands in the North Sound many years ago.

At the beach there will also be bouncing castles, food and loads of activities for everyone to enjoy. There will also be the chance to win plane tickets and other great prizes throughout the day.
